Make the most of summer with the River Colne

Free family activities and community wildlife event invite Watford residents to explore, play and protect their local river.

Residents are being encouraged to spend their summer discovering the River Colne, with two exciting opportunities to get outdoors, connect with nature and support local conservation efforts.

Watford Borough Council and Groundwork East are inviting the community to take part in a series of free, family-friendly Wild Play sessions as well as a special Invasive Species River Amble, designed to help protect the health of the river while enjoying the outdoors.

Invasive Species River Amble

Taking place on Wednesday 22 July 2026, 6.30–7.30pm, the Invasive Species River Amble will start from Watford Rugby Club, Radlett Road.

This relaxed evening walk offers residents the chance to learn how to identify and report invasive species along the River Colne. Groundwork is particularly looking for local volunteers to keep a watchful eye on the river and report any environmental concerns.

During the session, participants will be introduced to the INNS Mapper app, a publicly accessible tool used to record invasive non-native species. Attendees will gain hands-on experience using the app while identifying species such as Himalayan balsam, helping to protect local biodiversity.

River Colne Summer Wild Play Sessions

Families with young children can also enjoy a programme of free River Colne Wild Play sessions throughout the summer holidays at Oxhey Park (bridge near Oxhey Activity Park), Eastbury Road, WD18 0HZ.

Sessions will run on:

  • Thursday 30 July 2026

  • Wednesday 5 August 2026

  • Monday 24 August 2026

Each day features two time slots:

  • 10am – 11.30am

  • 12:30pm - 2pm

Led by Groundwork East, these engaging sessions offer children aged 3–9 (with parents or guardians) the chance to explore nature through scavenger hunts, creative activities and outdoor play. Each date will feature different activities, encouraging families to return and discover more about their local green spaces.

Elected Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: “Whether you’re looking for a gentle riverside walk, a chance to help nature locally, or a fun and educational activity for the family, the River Colne offers something for everyone this summer.

“By taking part, residents can enjoy the wellbeing benefits of nature while playing an active role in protecting one of Watford’s most valuable natural assets.”

Cllr Ian Stotesbury, Portfolio Holder for Transport and Sustainability, said “Spending time in nature is vital, not only for our wellbeing, but for our physical health too. Through combined efforts we can make sure nature’s health is improved too. I’d encourage everyone to get involved, enjoy our green spaces and help protect them for future generations.”
